There are a number of ways to get to Labrador West. Visitors to Labrador City, Wabush and Fermont, QC have the option of 3 modes of transportation, rail, air and road.

We have divided these to help make your trip here more enjoyable.


If By Air...

Planning on flying to visit Labrador West? Wabush Airport (YWK) has daily flights in and out of various Canadian Airports meeting the travelers needs for connections. Wabush Airport offers travelers a comfy setting while waiting for their flights. With an in-house licensed restaurant, Cain's Cafe, can offer the traveler a wide variety of foods including many Newfoundland type Home Cooked Meals.

From the Island of Newfoundland, Air Canada Jazz and Provincial Airlines offer the traveler flying options with connecting flights to Atlantic Canada and Europe in Goose Bay, St.John's, Deer Lake and Gander.

For those travelers wishing to go to Quebec City, Montreal, Toronto and beyond Air Canada Jazz and Provincial Airlines offer daily flights. For those traveling to Goose Bay or within Quebec with connections to New Brunswick, Pascan Aviation and Air Liaison are options for the traveler.

If By Rail...

For those travelers who don't like to fly or drive long distances, the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway (QNS&L), operated by Tshiuetin Railway Transportation (TRT), offers a passenger service to Labrador West from Sept-Iles, QC and return with two trips per week. The train will take the traveler through eight hours of beautiful wilderness and scenery. For the traveler not wanting to take vehicles over the long drive, they have the option to have their vehicle shipped via rail as well.

Travelers traveling to and from Labrador must take highway 500 to Emeril Jct. Travelers can wait for the train at the camp at Emeril. It is your responsibility to travel to Emeril, approximately 45 minutes drive from Labrador City.

If By Road...

From St. Barbe, NL to Labrador West

To get from the Island portion of the province, the traveler must go by ferry, the MV Apollo, owned by Woodward Group. The MV Apollo is a modern ferry which can accommodate 85 vehicles and 240 passengers. The vessel has comfortable seating, limited deck access, a cafeteria, and arcade.

Travel time from St. Barbe to Blanc Sablon take approximately 2 hours to make the 35 km (22 mile) crossing. On a clear day in spring you will have the opportunity to see icebergs as they make their way south through the Straits. Many whales and porpoises can be seen during crossings, so travelers should be on the look out.

Speed Limit: 70 km/hr (45mph)

Surfaces: paved - winding
